Before you procure
What to verify before procurement
Use these eight questions to compare any lone worker technology supplier.
- Current product range, exact models and compatible accessories for the specific worker roles you need to cover.
- Live pricing, minimum contract term and the total cost including any device, SIM, platform or support fees.
- Monitoring centre accreditation (for example BS 8484) and evidence it currently applies to the product being quoted, not just the supplier in general.
- Stated response times and the exact escalation route to police or other emergency services, including any conditions that must be met.
- Network and connectivity coverage for the actual buildings, sites and travel routes your staff work in.
- How location, audio and incident data is retained, accessed and protected, and whether that meets your organisation's data protection obligations.
- Onboarding and staff training support, and how practice activations or false alarms are handled without discouraging genuine use.
- Contract flexibility: adding or removing users, ending the contract, and what happens to service and data if the product is discontinued.
Record each supplier's answers in the independent Word and PDF handout.

Technology still needs confident staff behaviour
Verify the selected product, contract, response instructions and staff training arrangements before implementation. No device, however well specified, replaces a member of staff who has practised using it, trusts it and knows exactly what happens after they press it.
